How to set goals (and actually achieve them)
This process can work for both personal and professional goals, so even if you’re not at the stage of your career where you’re setting big professional goals, you can still use this guide!
Whether you aspire to be the next tech startup founder, someone who travels the world for a living, or a bestselling author, the path to achieving your dreams starts with effective goal-setting. The process might seem daunting at first, but with the right approach, you can break it down into manageable steps and keep your motivation high. The best part? This process can work for both personal and professional goals, so even if you’re not at the stage of your career where you’re setting big professional goals, you can still use this guide!
The secret to achieving your goals? Dreaming big but starting small.
It’s great to dream big (seriously, the bigger the better!). Big dreams are what drive us, but to make them a reality, we need to break them down into bite-sized chunks.
Step One: Think about the big picture
Write down your ultimate goal – and be as specific as possible. For example, “I want to write a bestselling novel.” Having a clear vision of your big picture goal gives you something tangible to strive towards. Some people like to write it on a Post-it note, some like to set it as their computer background, some like to keep it on their phone – you do you!
Step Two: Think about the baby steps to get there
Next, break down your goal into smaller, actionable steps. What’s the first small step you can take towards that goal? Perhaps it’s “Write 500 words a day” or “Take a creative writing class.” Small, manageable steps keep you motivated and moving forward, making the big goal feel less overwhelming and more achievable. Plus, who doesn’t love to tick off a to-do list?

Now you’ve got your smaller steps, you’re well on your way to setting yourself up for success. But, there are a few more things to think about to make sure you stay on track!
Tip #1 Be As Specific as Possible
Specific goals are your best friends in the goal-setting process. A vague goal like “I want to get fit” lacks clarity and direction. Instead, aim for something like “I will run 3 times a week for 30 minutes.” Notice the difference? Clarity is key to achieving your goals.
Ever heard of SMART goals? To set effective goals, use the SMART criteria:
- • Specific: What exactly do you want to achieve? Define your goal clearly.
- • Measurable: How will you know when you’ve achieved it? Set criteria for tracking your progress (e.g. “get better at writing” – how will you measure that?)
- • Achievable: Is it within your capabilities? Ensure your goal is realistic (and in the time frame you’re setting!).
- • Relevant: Does it align with your big-picture dreams? Your goal should matter to you.
- • Time-bound: What’s your deadline? Set a timeframe for when you want to achieve your goals (both smaller and bigger).
Using the SMART framework helps you create well-defined goals that are easier to follow and achieve.
Tip #2 Stay Flexible (Because Life Happens!)
Life has a funny way of throwing us curveballs. No matter how well you plan, unexpected events can disrupt your progress. The key is to stay flexible and adapt when necessary. If you miss a day or two, don’t sweat it – it’s not the end of the world. Adjust your plan and keep moving forward.
Remember: You can tweak your goals as you go!
It’s perfectly okay to change direction if needed. Goals evolve as you do. Regularly check in with your goals to ensure they still align with your aspirations and make changes as needed. Doing this keeps your goals relevant and attainable—and remember, it’s your goals, not anybody else’s!
Tip #3 Make Sure You Celebrate The Small Wins!
Every step forward is a win, no matter how small. Celebrating your progress boosts your motivation and reminds you that you’re on the right track. Did you write 500 words today? Go you! Ran for 30 minutes? How are you going to celebrate?
It could be a movie night, a small treat (chocolate anyone?), or simply some extra downtime. Celebrations keep you motivated and highlight the importance of recognising your progress.
Tip #4 Find an Accountability Buddy
Sharing your goals with friends or family can keep you accountable and provide a support system. Plus, we reckon it’s way more fun to celebrate hitting your goals together!
Find a friend with similar goals or join a community group. Check-in regularly, share progress, and cheer each other on. An accountability buddy can offer encouragement, provide constructive feedback, and help you stay on track.

Remember, working towards your goals is a journey, not a race. Keep moving forward, and before you know it, you’ll be ticking off those goals with ease.
